Ending U.S. Involvement in the War in Yemen

PANELISTS:

Erik Sperling – Executive Director, Just Foreign Policy (moderator)

Aisha Jumaan – President, Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation

Hassan El-Tayyab – Legislative Manager for Middle East Policy, Friends Committee on National Legislation

Shireen Al-Adeimi – Assistant Professor, Michigan State University

Bruce Riedel – Director of the Brookings Intelligence Project; Senior Fellow, Center for Middle East Policy (Invited)

This briefing will bring together policy experts, academics, and Yemeni human rights advocates to explore U.S. involvement in the Saudi-UAE-led war in Yemen. The panel will discuss Congress's bipartisan effort to reassert its authority to declare war, which was met by a veto last year, as well as what a Biden Administration could mean for peace in Yemen.

These experts will discuss and answer questions relating to: U.S. involvement in the Saudi-UAE-led war and how this conflict created the world's worst humanitarian crisis; the challenges and prospects of creating a bi-partisan coalition in Congress moving forward; implications for Yemen of the next presidential administration; and opportunities for the 117th Congress.

The panel will also discuss the bipartisan Yemen War Powers Resolution (WaPo coverage here), which was recently introduced by Representatives DeFazio, Biggs, Dingell, Gaetz, Castro, Rooney, Khanna, and Pocan, H.Con.Res. 123. Over 40 organizations urged members to cosponsor this resolution in this letter, on the basis that it would help set the stage for Congressional action in the 117th Congress. To cosponsor, message Bobby (Bobby.Puckett@mail.house.gov) in Rep. DeFazio's office or Jeff (Jeffrey.Kuckuck@mail.house.gov) in Rep. Biggs' office.
